TRYING AGAIN
It turned out we weren't as far away as I'd assumed. I'd imagined that Bernard-the-directionally-challenged had taken us in completely the wrong direction and possibly ventured into another country, but we were still in Wales, just a little north of where we needed to be.
As the miserable magical misfit meandered morosely through a snow-covered landscape, I vowed once more never to take him with me. It simply wasn't worth the hassle. I would have rather waded through waist-high snowdrifts than have the blood clot-inducing stress of dealing with his nonsense. Why couldn't my unicorn be smart? Kayin, who would be Jen's, was already ten times more intelligent than her mother and father combined, but at least with Betty she was sweet and cute with it. Bernard was just⦠Well, he was Bernard.
Yes, he had saved my life, and yes, he did a lot of cool stuff, but no, it wasn't enough. When I thought of all the windows I'd had to repair over the years, it made me shiver, and not from the cold.
"Why are you scrunching your face up like that?" I asked Phage.
"Mwf, proof, fog wet."
"You what?"
Phage relaxed her mouth and stopped her weird frown, then told me, "I'm trying to keep the route in my head. So Bernard doesn't have another accident."
"He does this a lot, doesn't he? Ha! I knew it! See, this is why I always prefer my bike."
"Some of us don't always have that luxury," she snapped. "You get to go in the summer. I travel when it's either raining, snowing, or just freezing cold. So I have to take him a lot of the time."
"Oh, right." That told me, and then some.
"I apologize. I didn't mean to snap. It's just beyond stressful."
"I know. It's okay. That's what I'm here for. To be shouted at and punched."
"No, I mean it. This isn't your fault. It's theirs. Soph, I want to go home."
"Me too. More than anything. Soon. We'll be home soon. Everything will be warm and cozy. The fire will be lit, Jen will be smiling, hopefully your mother will leave the moment we walk through the door, and everything will be perfect." I put my arm around her and beamed.
"It will, won't it? Just us. Our home. Together."
"Absolutely. A family."
Phage smiled again, but her eyes were downcast and they didn't twinkle. Then she resumed her face-pulling so Bernard wouldn't decide to just walk off a cliff. Hopefully.
Once we navigated the winding lane that led to the wrong castle, we emerged onto a wide main road. Bernard stopped, then began to turn left. Then he stopped, and swept right. Then he paused and turned his head to squint at Phage. We both saw the look she gave him and neither of us said a word. He simply faced front swiftly, and when Phage pulled on the rein in her right hand Bernard had the sense to follow her direction.
We were losing valuable time now, and no way did any of us want to get stuck in the middle of nowhere for the night, so Bernard began to increase his speed.
